WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO PHOTOGRAPH MOST?
I'm Mario, born in 1966 in Hamburg, where I grew up and lived until 10 years ago. Now, however, the north has my heart and I enjoy my life in Dithmarschen.
Here, between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, there are many opportunities to take pictures. I like to stay on the coasts, they are very diverse and if you are lucky, you can see a spectacular sunset on the horizon.
Landscape photography is my greatest passion, but I also like to try other techniques, such as macro photography.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?
I have been interested in photography since my apprenticeship as a photo salesman in Hamburg in 1983. The hobby was dormant for many years until I rediscovered digital photography about 5 years ago.
How did you take the winning photo in the Haukland Photographer of the Year photo contest?
That morning it was -16°C (3°F) cold and the wind came from the east. The sun rises here in February around 7:42. With a travel time of about 2 hours I left at 5, driving from the North Sea coast to the Baltic Sea coast. The picture was taken with ISO 100, f8, and 133 seconds exposure time. I surely used a graduated filter and possibly a polarizing filter, but I don't remember exactly 😉
WHICH TIP HAS BROUGHT YOU FORWARD IN PHOTOGRAPHY?
Photography is like exercising - if you don't practice, you can't and won't improve your skills.
The photographer takes the photo.
WHICH CAMERA AND LENS DO YOU USE MOST OFTEN?
I took the photo (Note: winning photo of the Haukland Photographer of the year 2021) with my old Canon 6D Mark 2. I now shoot with the Canon R5 and have no favorite lenses. It depends on what I need at the moment.
DO YOU HAVE A "PHOTO DREAM" OR GOALS FOR THE NEXT MONTHS/YEARS?
Yes, definitely the LOFOTEN ISLANDS, NEW YORK and ARUBA.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR HAUKLAND?
The Haukland is made for me, there are large enough pockets where I can store many things, if I want to go without a backpack.
