Interview with wildlife Photographer Simon D'Entremont

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO PHOTOGRAPH THE MOST?

My name is Simon d’Entremont and I live in Nova Scotia Canada and what I like to photograph the most is wildlife. I’m particularly fond of birds, but I also spend a lot of time in Africa photographing the amazing wildlife they have there, especially big cats and other big mammals. And they do have an amazing selection of birds that sometimes is under-appreciated.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHy

I started my photography around Astro photography and astronomy, as I really love photographing the Milky Way and galaxies and stars. I do still own a telescope and Astro photography cameras that are dedicated to this task, with cooling and other features that make it great for very dim subjects in the night sky.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE PHOTO AND WHY?

One of my favourite photos ever is photographing the breath of singing birds, in particular one of a singing red wing blackbird. This was actually the topic of my first YouTube video which the start of my YouTube career, for which I’m very thankful. It has been very well received, people really seem to enjoy my content and I very much enjoy making it for them. I was actually able to show people how to get this photo of a singing bird and it’s breath on a cold morning which was fun - to be able to educate people how to get it and it’s the photo by which I may be the best known.

Which TIP HAS HELPED YOU IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY?

I think the best tip for me was to shoot subjects in wildlife at eye-level. This creates more intimate looking photos, it blurs the background and separates the it from your subject. It gives you a much better view into the lives of your subjects when you’re shooting at the same level that they see the world as.

WHICH CAMERA AND LENS DO YOU USE MOST OFTEN?

Being a wildlife photographer, my favourite lens is my big super telephoto prime lens, which is my Canon RF 600 mm F4 lens. I shoot it on a Canon R5 or a Canon R5 II, which are my favourite cameras to use right now. These cameras have a very high frame rate of 12 frames per second with a mechanical shutter and 20 or 30 frames per second with an electronic shutter. They also have amazing eye detection for wildlife, great image quality and at 45 megapixels give me plenty of resolution if I need to crop my photos, which is quite common in wildlife photography.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR HAUKLAND JACKET?

My Haukland jacket is amazing in large part because of the three layers that you can swap around in different conditions. And as we know in wildlife photography, we’re out in the elements and the weather changes very quickly and you need to have layers to be able to adjust your clothing to the weather conditions of the moment.

DO YOU HAVE A “PHOTOGRAPHIC DREAM” OR GOALS FOR THE NEXT YEARS?

I think my project for the next year in wildlife photography is going to be to shoot a wider field of view and include more environment in my photos, allowing for more storytelling rather than shooting tight portraits of my subjects all the time, which I think is a weakness of ours in wildlife photography. We’re so happy to get a subject in the frame and get a sharp photo of wildlife and to find the wildlife, that sometimes we abandon some of the best practices in composition and other types of more advanced photography techniques.
