Longevity – How to Make Your Haukland Jacket Last Longer

Zipper

The Haukland outer jacket zipper is a two-way zipper, so you can open it from the top or the bottom. Because the jacket is designed to be longer, you should always open the bottom of the zipper when squatting or entering a car. Depending on the shape and size of your body, too much stress can be placed on the bottom of the zipper over time, causing it to become warped out of shape. If the bottom of the zipper is warped, it will no longer close or may get stuck.

Best practice: Don't put too much pressure on it in the first place by always opening from the bottom when squatting or sitting down.

Washing & Reproofing

Haukland outer jackets are treated with a water-repellent coating. After exposure to heavy rain, this coating gradually wears off and will eventually need to be renewed. Washing the jacket in a machine is even harsher than rain and affects the coating even more. Additionally, some ingredients in detergents can damage both the materials and the water-repellent coating.

For this reason, there are special outdoor detergents and wash-in waterproofing solutions that you can use for Haukland products. These help to refresh the coating during washing. Alternatively, you can use an external waterproofing spray, similar to those used for shoes. The waterproofing should be refreshed at least once a year, especially if you spend a lot of time in the rain, and definitely after each wash.

If possible, avoid washing the jacket frequently. In most cases, it can simply be wiped clean with a sponge. The outer jacket should not be washed with fabric softeners or put in the dryer. Always follow the care instructions on the garment’s label.

Velcro

The Velcro fastener on the sleeves allows you to adjust the wrist opening, which is helpful on cold or windy days. To prevent the Velcro from catching on other fabrics, such as the wind stoppers or other clothing, make sure it is properly secured. The Velcro should not extend past the strap, as exposed hooks can snag on other garments, potentially creating loops in the fabric.
