Haukland outer jackets are treated with a water-repellent coating. After exposure to heavy rain, this coating gradually wears off and will eventually need to be renewed. Washing the jacket in a machine is even harsher than rain and affects the coating even more. Additionally, some ingredients in detergents can damage both the materials and the water-repellent coating.
For this reason, there are special outdoor detergents and wash-in waterproofing solutions that you can use for Haukland products. These help to refresh the coating during washing. Alternatively, you can use an external waterproofing spray, similar to those used for shoes. The waterproofing should be refreshed at least once a year, especially if you spend a lot of time in the rain, and definitely after each wash.
If possible, avoid washing the jacket frequently. In most cases, it can simply be wiped clean with a sponge. The outer jacket should not be washed with fabric softeners or put in the dryer. Always follow the care instructions on the garment’s label.
